Does Squirrly SEO add hreflang tags?

No, Squirrly SEO doesn’t print hreflang tags, so on a multilingual site they come from your translation plugin.

WPML’s documentation says it “automatically inserts and updates hreflang tags on your original, and translated pages.” Polylang adds them too, on every page that has a translation. Squirrly SEO works with both plugins, see Does Squirrly SEO support multilanguage plugins?

Check the tags on your site

  1. Open a translated page and view the page source.
  2. Search for hreflang. You should see one <link rel="alternate" hreflang="..."> line for each language of that page.

A page with no translation yet has no hreflang lines. Translate it, and the lines show on both versions.

Sitemaps for more languages

With Polylang, Combine Languages in Sitemap in Sitemap XML Settings puts all languages in the same sitemap.xml file.
